Greenland’s southern shores contain some of the most culturally and scenically diverse regions of the island. Traversing a landscape rich in wildlife, we explore the unique and divergent communities of the world’s largest island.
Itinerary
Day 1
Begin in Reykjavik, the world’s northernmost capital and embark MS Fram this afternoon.
Day 2
Sail to Grundarfjördur to the north of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, a rich volcanic landscape of glaciers, fishing villages and seabirds. Optional shore excursions.
Days 3 & 4
At sea, with on board lectures.
Day 5
Visit the tiny settlement of Igaliko, explore its 12th century ruins and enjoy the stunning views.
Day 6
At the southern tip of the island, Qaqortoq is a thriving fishing community and the largest municipality in southern Greenland, boasting its oldest fountain, some superb colonial architecture and a collection of remarkable sculptures.
Day 7
The Viking settlement of Erik the Red, Qassiarsuq is the site of a reconstruction of Erik’s longhouse and church. Guided walk to visit both sites.
Day 8
Visit Narsaq, set on a fertile plain amidst a dazzling array of fjords and icebergs. The Narsaq Peninsula is rich in wildlife, with seals and minke whales often in evidence.
Day 9
Ivittuut is Greenland’s smallest community, with just 200 people living in an area of some 600 square kilometres. Lying close to the beautiful waters of the Karsakn Strait, the area is rich in mineral deposits. Visit the abandoned mines.
Day 10
Greenland’s political and social centre, Nuuk is the oldest town in the country, a charming mix of picturesque colonial architecture and modern life. Visit the town and its museum for an insight into the country’s distinctive heritage.
Day 11
Sail to Sisimiut, just to the north of the Arctic Circle. Enjoy a kayak show, demonstrating the old hunting techniques of the Inuits, and a guided walk. For the more active, a walk to the ruins on Teleøen will reveal a cultural history dating back nearly 5000 years.
Day 12
Sail through the ice-packed waters off the coast of Saqqaq towards Eqip Sermia Glacier. Use tender boats to make landings near the glacier, with a chance to hike in the area and enjoy a barbecue ashore.
Day 13
Sail to Ilulissat, a UNESCO World Heritage site sitting at the end of a vast ice fjord and filled with massive icebergs from the mighty Jakobshavn Glacier. Cultural visits and optional excursions offer a range of spectacular introductions to the area.
Day 14
Sail to Evighedsfjorden, set before the towering height of Narparutaq, Western Greenland’s highest peak. Conditions allowing we will use tender boats to explore the glacier and possibly land for a short hike.
Day 15
Sail to Kangerlussuaq and disembark ship by tender boats. Transfer for return flights to Copenhagen.
Day 16
Arrive Copenhagen.
