South Greenland, Labrador & Newfoundland

Departs 24 September 2009
16 days from £4940pp

Following in the intrepid footsteps of Vikings and whalers, this incredible voyage travels from Greenland’s western coast to the dramatic waters off eastern Canada, taking in colonial settlements, UNESCO heritage sites and whale feeding grounds en route.

Itinerary

Day 1
Embark MS Fram in Kangerlussuaq, the ‘Gateway’ to Greenland. Transfer to ship by use of Polar Cirkel boats.

Day 2
At sea. On board lectures

Day 3
Visit Nuuk, Greenland’s oldest town and its vibrant capital, a captivating mix of the old and the new, set at the mouth of one of the largest and most spectacular fjord systems on Earth. Visiting the town gives an insight into Greenland’s independent spirit and its National Museum contains some of the oldest artefacts ever found in the Arctic cultural region.

Day 4
Sail to Ivittuut, Greenland’s smallest community, lying close to the beautiful waters of the Karsakn Strait. Rich in mineral deposits, this is the site of an abandoned cryolite mine, exploited by the Allies during WWII.

Day 5
Visit Qassiarsuq, the site of the Viking settlement of the exiled Icelander Eric the Red, believed to be the original departure point for Leiv Eriksson’s epic voyage to America. Enjoy a guided tour of the settlement and the reconstructed longhouse and church.

Days 6 & 7
At sea, crossing the Davis Strait. On board lectures.

Day 8
Sail to St. Anthony, Newfoundland, site of the Grenfell Museum and just a short distance from the UNESCO setting of L’Anse aux Meadows, the famous landing site of Leiv Eriksson’s American adventure.

Day 9
Red Bay is another UNESCO site, one steeped in the history of the Basque Whalers of the 15th century. This region is blessed with some of the best-preserved cultural heritage in the region, including the Point Amour lighthouse and L’Anse Amour, a National Historic Site believed to be one of the oldest burial sites in North America.

Day 10
Sail to Corner Brook, Newfoundland, located close to the spectacular natural beauty of the UNESCO setting of Gros Morne National Park.

Day 11
Visit Sydney, Nova Scotia, the largest urban community on Cape Breton Island.

Day 12
Today sees us visiting the port of Halifax, lying along the beautiful rugged coastline of Nova Scotia and steeped in rich history. The first Canadian town to be settled by the British, Halifax is a delightful fusion of scenic grandeur and colonial charm.

Day 13
At sea. On board lectures.

Day 14
Sail into Gloucester on Boston’s North Shore, located between two major whale feeding grounds that attract humpbacks, finbacks, dolphins and a myriad of seabirds to the rich coastal waters.

Day 15
At sea. On board lectures.

Day 16
Journey’s end sees us in New York, where we disembark and may enjoy some of the ‘Big Apple’s’ dazzling array of attractions, from downtown Manhattan to the Statue of Liberty.
