This exploratory voyage takes us through a wonderland of natural and cultural diversity, where towering icebergs plunge into the clear icy waters of majestic fjords and the bays and coasts abound with traditional fishing communities.
Itinerary
Day 1
Arrive Kangerlussuaq, located at the end of a spectacular 170 kilometre long fjord, and transfer by Polar Cirkel boats to MS Fram.
Day 2
Sail to Qeqertarsuaq on Disko Island, negotiating the constantly changing landscapes of towering icebergs that float around Disko Bay. Land by Polar Cirkel boats and visit the old whaling settlement, with optional hikes available to the magnificent basalt landscapes of the ‘Valley of the Winds’.
Day 3
Continue north and sail to Uummannaq, situated at the foot of an 1170 metre tall heart-shaped mountain along Greenland’s ‘Sunshine Coast’. On arrival visit the town and its museum, with its unique collection of artefacts associated with the famous Qilakitsoq Mummies. Possibility to hike up to ‘Santa’s Cabin’, for some breathtaking views out across the Nuussuaq Peninsula. This evening call into the small community of Ukkusissat.
Day 4
Sail through the ice-packed waters off the coast of Saqqaq towards Eqip Sermia Glacier, whose expansive face gives an opportunity to get close to one of the regions towering ice giants. Use tender boats to make landings near the glacier, with a chance to hike in the area and enjoy a barbecue dinner ashore.
Day 5
Sail to Ilulissat, the Greenlandic word for ‘Iceberg’. A UNESCO World Heritage site sitting at the end of a vast fjord, it is filled with massive icebergs from the mighty Jakobshavn Glacier. Cultural visits and optional excursions offer a range of spectacular introductions to the area, including a boat trip and helicopter ride, as well as a guided hike to the nearby settlement of Sermermiut, believed to hold evidence of Inuit culture dating back 3500 years.
Day 6
Sail to Sisimuit, just to the north of the Arctic Circle. Enjoy a kayak show, demonstrating the old hunting techniques of the local Inuits, before a guided walk with a visit to the Sisimuit Museum and an opportunity to partake in local workshops. For the more active, a walk to the old ruins on Teleøen will reveal a cultural history that dates back nearly 5000 years, to the Saqqaq culture.
Day 7
Sail to Evighedsfjorden (The Eternity Fjord), set before the towering height of Narparutaq, Western Greenland’s highest peak. Cruise along the glacier, taking in something of the immensity and grandeur of the 2000 metres high cliffs and breathtaking vistas.
Day 8
Sail to Kangerlussuaq and disembark ship. A bus tour to the Ice cap is included before an evening barbecue dinner beside Lake Ferguson. Transfer to airport for return flight to Copenhagen.
