Travelling aboard the MS Nordkapp, this fascinating voyage explores the cultural traditions of the Sami and Kven people, within the framework of the Hurtigruten Coastal Voyage between beautiful Bergen and the remote northern landscapes of Kirkenes.
A staunch pride in traditional roots has always been an inherent part of the Norwegian character, their national costumes becoming a symbol of pride and cultural significance during the historical occupations by the Danes and Swedes. The remoteness of the coastal communities has seen these traditions survive well into the modern age and regional costumes are still an integral part of community life even today.
This remarkable journey explores these roots in some depth, with daily lectures, handicraft workshops and a series of dance and music programmes that provide a telling and engrossing insight into Norway’s rich heritage. On board experts will explain and demonstrate the practical aspects of time honoured handicrafts, whilst costume parades provide a unique opportunity to see these colourful traditions first hand. There will be an emphasis on Sami and Kven cultures as you journey towards Kirkenes, allowing you to combine the diversity of Norway’s regional traditions with the minority cultures of the extreme north, all against the breathtaking vistas of some of the most dramatic and pristine landscapes on Earth.
