From the contrasting streets of Buenos Aires and Ushuaia, this captivating adventure aboard MS Fram journeys to abandoned whaling stations, isolated bays and vast penguin colonies, on a voyage of breathtaking scope.
Day 1
The journey begins in the Argentinean capital of Buenos Aires on the shores of the Rio de la Plata. Your stay gives an opportunity to explore the city that many have called the ‘Paris of the South’. You might like to visit the cities grandiose European architecture, perhaps see the famous mausoleums of the Recoleta Cemetery, or take in a fabulous Tango show.
Day 2
Fly to Ushuaia, the world’s southernmost city, located at the very tip of the South American continent and embark MS Fram later this afternoon. Set sail towards the Drake Passage, via the Beagle Channel and Cape Horn.
Days 3 – 4
Over the coming days we cross the infamous waters of the Drake Passage, where the two great oceans of the Atlantic and the Pacific meet beneath brooding skies filled with countless curious seabirds. Head for the northernmost tip of the vast white continent of Antarctica, the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland Islands. Our estimated arrival will be during the afternoon of day 4.
Days 4 – 8
In Antarctica. Our landing sites in Antarctica will vary from voyage to voyage, depending upon ice and weather conditions. We hope to sail to Deception Island, with its spectacular views of the volcano‘s caldera and Whaler’s Bay, where we have a good chance of spotting whales amongst the rich waters. We also hope to visit the narrow iceberg-lined Lemaire Channel, considered by many to be one of the most beautiful passages in Antarctica and, if conditions allow, the breathtaking Neumayer Channel. We will take in old abandoned whaling stations and idyllic bays where ice, rocks and penguins are all you can see for miles. We will stop off at remote research stations and isolated sites like Port Lockroy, sail into awe-inspiring locations like Neko Harbour and Petermann Island and also try to use our tender boats to land on sites like Half Moon Island with its chinstrap penguin rookery and Cuverville Island which has a large gentoo penguin population. Depending on the season you will also be able to witness nest-building activities, breeding or the arrival of penguin chicks.
Days 8 – 9
Sail across Drake Passage back towards Cape Horn, covering some 800 km over the next day and a half. Enjoy on board lectures.
Day 10
Arrive in Ushuaia. Possibility to pay an optional visit to Tierra del Fuego National Park, the spectacular ‘Land of Fires’, home to rare Fuegian foxes, condor and a landscape of glacial lakes, tundra and dramatic mountains. Fly to Buenos Aires and stay overnight.
Day 11
Transfer to the airport for your international flight.
