This popular extension, which can be combined with many of our itineraries, takes in one of Europe’s most breathtaking rail journeys, crossing the high plateau of the Hardangervidda, across the roof of Norway to the lush landscapes of the western fjords.
Travelling between Bergen and Oslo this spectacular journey passes through a landscape of forested valleys and sparkling lakes and over the largest mountain plateau in Northern Europe, making it the highest mainline railway line on the continent.
Running for nearly 500 km this beautiful rail journey crosses some 300 bridges, traversing deep, narrow valleys and countless rivers and streams, passes through 182 tunnels and spans a landscape that takes in some of Norway’s most diverse natural and geographical features. From the highest point of the journey, at Finse, the expansive majesty of the Hardangerjokulen Glacier is laid out before you and around Bergen the iconic landscapes of the breathtaking fjord region are characterised by the arrival of lush orchards and snow-encrusted peaks.
